A retired person’s visa, or informally known as a ‘retirement visa’, is designed for foreign nationals who wish to retire and reside in the Republic. It provides retirees, or persons who meet the criteria, with an opportunity to live in South Africa and enjoy its unique blend of modern conveniences and the untouched beauty of nature.

How do I qualify for a retirement visa?

To be eligible for this visa, one must be able to prove that they have access to a prescribed amount of funds in order to sustain their lifestyle in South Africa. One will need to prove that they have access to and be able to draw down from an amount of at least R37 000.00 per month for the duration of the visa.

What are the requirements for a retirement visa?

In addition to proving the prescribed funds, the following documents are typically required for a retirement visa application:

Original Police Clearance Certificate(s) for each country one has lived in for 12 months or more in the past 5 years from date of application.

Detailed confirmation report from Chartered Accountant confirming funds available

How long is a retirement visa valid for?

A retirement visa may be issued for a period of four (4) years where funds cover that full duration. The visa may be renewed in South Africa for a further period, and one is eligible for to qualify for permanent residency if they can prove they have access to the prescribed amount of R37 000.00 for a lifetime.

How long does it take to get a retirement visa?

The processing time will depend on the South African Consulate/Embassy/High Commission, however the average processing time is between 4 – 8 weeks.

Am I allowed to work or conduct business in South Africa?

The Department of Home Affairs may grant work or business permission where motivation and proof are provided. However, as this is a retirement visa, the expectation is to conduct work or business on an ad hoc basis as you cannot be a retiree and a full time worker/business owner.

I am currently in South Africa on a tourist visa, can I apply for a retirement visa from within South Africa?

Unfortunately not as one is not able to change from a short-term tourist visa to a long-term visa from within South Africa. You will thus have to apply for the visa from your home country or country of residence.

Can I bring my spouse and dependents with me on a retirement visa?

Yes, spouses and dependents may apply to accompany you provided they comply with the requirements and you can financially support them in South Africa (at a minimum R3 000.00 per dependent)

Can I own property in South Africa while on a retirement visa?

Yes, many retirees’ own property in South Africa seeing that it is such a desirable destination. The proof of property can also be included in the application as support and proof of assets and investment into the country.
